The other day I was looking back at some of my past projects and was inspired to add a little more pop and pizazz for an extra wow factor. Today, I’ll be sharing 7 different ways to use Shimmer Paint by Stampin Up, so keep with me and I’ll show you all these fun ways to use this beautiful product. What is Shimmer Paint?
If you haven’t already heard of Shimmer Paint, here’s a little overview of what it is. Stampin Up’s Shimmer Paint is a paint accessory for your paper craft and other home projects that is available in two colors; Frost White and Champagne Mist. It adds subtle shimmer and shine when sponged, stamped or painted onto your projects. Shimmer Paint is acid free and nontoxic. It comes in a .5 ft. oz. (15mil.) round container with a twist off lid. It also includes a ball inside to help get it mixed properly when the bottle is shaken.
Shimmer paint isn’t any fun unless you know how to use it. Let’s start talking!
How to Use Shimmer Paint
Stampin Up’s Shimmer Paint is one of those accessories that can be used in several different ways. It’s an open-ended media meaning there are so many different ways to use it and there’s no wrong or right answer. Shimmer Paint can be painted on, dabbed on with a sponge, stamped or heat set. In the next section, I’ve listed 7 different ways I used Shimmer Paint to jazz up my cards. Let’s look at them.
1. Spritzing With Shimmer Paint
For this sample, I mixed the Shimmer Paint with rubbing alcohol into a Spritzer. Water can also be used, but I prefer alcohol because it dries faster and reduces warping on your paper. I used the Frost White Shimmer Paint on this project. Look closely – can you see the beautiful glimmer?
2. Sponging
Another way to use Shimmer Paint is to sponge it over top of your cardstock or designer paper. Here I sponged Champagne Mist shimmer paint onto red cardstock. When applied evenly this leaves a really nice shimmery finish. If you prefer to apply the paint unevenly, you can leave swirls in the finish or even dab it for areas with more and less shimmer.
For the butterfly cards below, I used the Frost White paint and sponged on top of the vellum butterflies. This is hard to appreciate in the photo, but it’s simply beautiful!
This beautiful card was also painted with a sponge. I used the Champagne Mist paint sponged over the die cut seashells. I think it turned out so lovely.
3. Water Painters and Shimmer Paint
This project was created using Stampin Up’s Water Painters. Water Painters are fun to use, and they can create some really neat effects on your projects. Simply fill the Water Painter with water and dip the brush tip into Shimmer Paint. Paint accents onto any part of the project you want to highlight and add shine to.
4. Stamping
Did you ever think that you can even stamp with Shimmer Paint? To do this, I reached for one of my favorite tools, the Stamparatus. First I poured some Shimmer Paint onto a Silicone Craft Mat, then spread it around with a sponge. I used this in place of an ink pad to ‘ink’ my stamp, and then I stamped onto cardstock. Make sure to clean your stamp quickly before the paint dries. For details on how to do this or any of the other techniques, make sure to watch the video I shared above!
This technique leaves a very translucent and shimmery image on your project. Here’s how this card turned out.
I did the same thing with this card and the Blossoms In Bloom stamp set. Isn’t it lovely?
5. Adding Droplets
Another way to use this neat product is to add some embellishments in the form of Shimmer Paint droplets. To create the round droplets on this card, I used the stylus end of my Take Your Pick tool, and dipped it into the Champagne Shimmer Paint. Then I touched the stylus to the card to add the droplet in my preferred location.

6. Splattering with Shimmer Paint
This next technique is really fun to do. Look closely to see the shimmer paint splatters on the card below. To achieve this look, I dipped a Water Painter into Stampin Up’s Shimmer Paint, and squeezed it until a water droplet formed on the brush tip but did not drop to my paper (always do this over scrap paper). Then I hit the Water Painter on my hand to send the watery paint splattering across my project. Watch the video for details!
And now for our final technique…
7. Adding Color to Shimmer Paint
With this last technique, you can add color to the shimmer paint and then use it in any of the ways I already talked about. To achieve this, simply reach for an ink refill in the color of your choice. Drop some shimmer paint onto your silicone craft mat along with an ink droplet. Mix as desired, and then you can used your colored paint for any of the previously listed techniques.
I added some Seaside Spray shimmer paint to some of the flowers on the card below using a Water Painter.
