How To Sharpen Paper Punches Using Foil!

13 Feb

I have a question for you. When was the last time you sharpened your punches? Or maybe I should ask a different question… do you know how to sharpen paper punches? I love my Stampin Up punches because they seriously last forever, but sometimes after a ton of use, they begin to get a little dull. If that’s the case for you, you’re going to enjoy this sharpening tip I have to share today. Let’s talk about it!

Check my video out below to watch along as I sharpen my paper punches and explain all the important info.

Materials Needed

How to sharpen punches isn’t a huge secret, but many crafters have never sharpened their punches. I love how quick and simple it is to bring those punches back to life.

Before getting started, choose one of your punches you think is getting a little dull. Punch some paper with it. This will help you feel the difference before and after sharpening. Okay now, let’s get started.

You’ll only need two common household items to sharpen your punches. They are:

  • Aluminum Foil or a Foil Pan
  • Wax Paper

Now let’s talk about what to do with your foil and wax paper!

How To Sharpen Paper Punches

To begin, either tear off several pieces of aluminum foil, or cut the bottom out of the foil pan. If you use foil, stack several pieces together or fold it a few times to get good thickness. If you use a pan, one thickness is enough. You can see in this picture how I’ve prepared the foil pan. *Note – be extremely careful! If you use a pan bottom, there will be sharp edges!

Get your punch that needs sharpening. Take hold of the foil/pan and punch it several times through the foil. Each punch will help sharpen it.

Next, stack up two pieces of wax paper with a piece of cardstock in between. This will lubricate your punch and help it to punch ‘like butter!”

Give it a couple punches through the wax paper. At this point it should feel like a different punch and be noticeably easier to use.

And that’s how you sharpen paper punches. I hope you’ve enjoyed this tip today. Are there other tips and tricks you’d like to learn about? If so, leave a comment and let me know!
