I’ve been wanting to try making a slimline card and envelope for quite a while. A good friend sent me a picture of one she made recently, and it inspired me to make my own! If you haven’t tried making one before, you have to try it! Join me for today’s tutorial, including slimline card dimensions and instructions for making a coordinating envelope.
What Is It?
A slimiline card is a long and narrow card made to fit in a regular #10 business envelope, which measures approximately 4 1/8″ x 9 1/2″.
This type of card is much longer and narrower than the most common size of handmade card, which measures 4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″ and fits in an A2 size envelope.
Pros of Using This Card Design
Slimline cards are a fun change from the normal routine of A2 cards! Because they’re long and narrow, you have a larger surface to create your design, and you can create more of a ‘scene.’
Making a ‘scene’ is great when making cards. Not so great when you’re raising toddlers 😉
Cons of Using This Card Design
For standard A2 size cards, you can cut two card bases from one sheet of 8 1/2″ x 11″ cardstock. With these cards, that is not the case. You can only cut one card base from each sheet, with a strip left over to add to your scrap bin.
Does Mailing A Slimline Card Require Additional Postage?
No! The envelope for a slimline card is the same as a standard business envelope, and therefore it does not require additional postage.

Slimline Card Dimensions
A slimline card measures 3 1/2″ x 8 1/2″. The coordinating envelope I’ll share with you today measures 4″ x 9″.
How To Make A Slimline Card Base
Slimline Card Dimensions and Mats
To make your slimline card base, begin with a piece of 7″ x 8 1/2″ cardstock. Score it down the center at 3 1/2″. Fold it in half, and crease with a bone folder.
The mats I used for the card front measure 3″ x 8″ for the designer paper and 2 3/4″ x 7 3/4″ for the white cardstock.
How To Make Slimline Card Envelopes
Scoring The Envelope
To make a slimline card envelope, begin with a piece of 8 1/2″ x 11″ cardstock. With the cardstock laying vertically, create a score line at 2 1/2″ and 6 1/2″.
Turn the cardstock horizontally and score it at 1 1/2″ and 10 1/2″.
Trimming The Envelope
Trim each of the corners out using scissors. The two flaps on the left are trimmed at a slight angle, which you can see in the photo below or in my video tutorial.
Fold the long flaps inward, and use a corner rounder to round the remaining four corners.
Folding And Adhering The Envelope
Attach strong adhesive such as Tear and Tape adhesive to the three flaps as shown.
Fold in the wider flap, then remove the paper backing from the narrower flap and fold it in to adhere it.
Remove paper backing from the narrow flap, fold and adhere it.
Done! Now you have a pretty envelope for your lovely card 🙂
Snowman Season Slimline Card Design
Because it’s Christmas in July time, I decided to use the Stampin Up Snowman Season stamp set for this card. It was the perfect stamp set to create a scene on this long and narrow card base.
I used water painters and ink to color in snowmen. I love how this card turned out!

Very informative. For me, it’s easier to see it in black and white and try to figure it out myself. There is too much involved in watching a video and taking notes. I’ll watch the video separately, if needed.

Is the slimline card envelope mailable with basic stamp or does it need additional money?
A regular stamp works because it is the same size as a business envelope.
How would you go about making this if card is on the thick side? Like a dimensional envelope for instance.
