Are you ready for an idea for motivation and encouragement? If so, you’re in the right place, because this month’s OSAT Blog Hop projects all feature the theme, ‘You Got This.’ Typically when I’m planning projects for these events, I create something to use as a gift. However, today my project is just for me. I’ve been wanting to create a vision board for quite some time, and with today’s theme in mind, I decided to finally do it. I want a daily visual reminder in my life that, “I’ve got this.” Join in and read along, while I explain more about what vision boards are and how to create a vision board!
What Is It?
A vision board is a visual representation of your goals, displayed in a location where you see it often. Think of it as a collage of your aspirations. If you are working towards a promotion at work, it may include a picture of a confident business woman. If your goal is to begin booking gigs with your band, have a picture of a band performing on stage. Is healthy eating what you’re working towards? Include a photo of fruits and vegetables. Are you saving money for a family vacation? Include pictures from your last vacation or photos of your desired vacation spot.
By seeing these images often, you will be reminded of the things you desire so strongly to achieve. Your thoughts can remain focused on your dreams, instead of drifting to less positive places as our thoughts often do!
Do you need a daily reminder to keep your thoughts positive? A vision board will do that. Do you need a daily reminder of who you want to be and what you’re working towards? It will do that too. A vision boad can help you in many ways! Let’s learn more about them.
How And Why Do They Work?
Are you familiar with the terms ‘visualization’ and ‘manifestation?’ The idea behind these two practices is that by focusing your thoughts and energy on the life you want to live, it helps those dreams become reality.
If you’re new to this idea, you may think this is crazy. By dreaming of going on a vacation to Hawaii next year, it will actually help it happen? That’s what I’m saying. Many research studies back this up, and celebrities and others who use these techniques agree that this stuff really works.
How To Create Yours Step-by-Step
If you’re intrigued by this idea and want to know more, keep reading. Let’s talk about how to create a vision board!
Determine Your Goals
First you must determine what you really want in life. To be happy? Rich? Be able to play the piano? Quit your job and open an art gallery? Whatever it is, the first step is to become 100% clear on what it is you want. When thinking of this, remove limitations in your mind. You may not have the time, money, or energy to get where you want to go, but ignore that for now. If there were no limits, what would you truly want in life? Use the process below to help determine your goals.
Relax And Clear Your Mind
To do this, it’s a good idea to relax in a quiet room. Close your eyes, do some neck rolls. Shake out your arms. Take deep breaths. Relax, and clear your mind. Think about your life in one, five, or ten years, and go through your day from the moment you wake up until you crawl into bed that night. What time do you wake up? When you crawl out of bed, what do you do first? How do you prepare for your day? What do you eat for breakfast? How do you feel? Continue thinking through your day step by step until you crawl into bed that night.
Now that you have an idea of what you want your life to look like, you’ll need to set some goals.
Sample Goals
It’s time to determine your goals and make a list of them. Here are some ideas to get you thinking.
Personal goals: Eat healthier, exercise regularly, read 100 books, learn to play the harp, hike the Appalachian Trail, be elected to the local school board, not yell at your chidren, have more of a positive mindset, or smile more.
Relationship goals: Have a weekly date night with your spouse, meet your best friend monthly for girls night, invite other moms over regularly for grown up time.
Professional goals: Be hired for the job of your dreams, get promoted, reach a sales goal, be hired as the keynote speaker for a conference, acquire a new client, receive a pay raise, or start your own business.
Stop thinking, ‘It won’t happen, so I better come up with easier goals.’ If there were no limits, what would you want to achieve?
When thinking about your timeline, you can decide if your goals and vision board are for a fairly short term such as one year or if you want to think longer-term such as five or ten years down the road.
Gather Materials
You will need the following to create your vision board:
- A posterboard or frame
- Glue stick, rubber cement, or papercrafting adhesive
- Scissors
- Magazines or a computer and printer
Find Images To Represent Your Goals
The next step in how to create a vision board is to find images to represent your goals. Look through magazines, personal photos, or do a Google images search to find images and text to remind you of your goals.
If you want to eat well, find pictures of vegetables and fruits. If you desire to travel to Paris, include a picture of the Eiffel Tower. Words and phrases can be helpful too, such as ‘Confident,’ or ‘You Got This.’
Before completing this step, revisit your list of goals and make sure you have images to represent each goal.
Assemble Your Board
Now it’s time to attach your images to your board or frame. Arrange them how you like before using any adhesive. Once you like the arrangement, attach them and add decorations if you desire.
My Vision Board
Let’s take a look at my vision board in detail.
I organized my board into three sections: family, personal, and professional.
Family
In my family section at the top left, I included:
- A picture of my favorite human, my husband. He’s at the top because we must take care of our marriage if the rest of our life can be good!
- A photo of my daughter and I dressed up with nowhere to go on Easter this past year. This photo represents making the best of any situation. We didn’t get to celebrate with family, but we dressed up, watched TV on the couch, had a big Easter feast, decorated cookies, and then took a walk in the woods. It was a wonderful day!
- Photos of doing everyday activities as a family.
Personal
My personal section at the top right includes:
- Photos of healthy foods and a woman exercising
- An open Bible to remind me to open mine more often
- A picture of me driving the tractor during a family workday in the field this past winter. I included this because I aspire to be able to help as much as possible around the farm.
- Photos of our church and the 4-H logo. Being involved in my community is important to me, and I want to continue working towards being more involved.
Professional
My professional section includes photos related to my Stampin Up business:
- Building up stamping classes at my new home
- Helping and growing my Stampin Up team
- Earning the next Stampin Up Incentive Trip
- Becoming a presenter at a Stampin Up conference
- Being recognized as a top Stampin Up demonstrator
- Getting my website to the top of Google search results
- Becoming a $1,000,000 acheiver and being able to design my own stamp set
Some of these goals are very lofty. I’ve always had dreams larger than myself, and I’ve been able to achieve things I never would have imagined. I’ll continue dreaming big, because I know I can do it!
I hope this has helped you learn how to create a vision board! Before we wrap up, I have one last part of my board to discuss.
One Last Thought
Since the frame I used for my vision board has a ribbon across the front, I decided to make two small cards to hang on this ribbon. When I reach certain goals, I will open these cards. I want them to be my reminders to savor what I have achieved instead of immediately looking forward to what comes next.
Below you can see the two cards I made using the Ridiculously Awesome stamp set. Are you new to stamping but interested in learning? Start here.
Here you can see the cards up close.
