A Lesson In Parenting – Can You Tell Me The Lesson?

25 Jun

We’ll take a break from the farm this week and I’ll share a funny parenting story from a few weeks ago. Can someone please tell me what lesson I’m supposed to learn from this?!?!

Are there certain topics you would like me to share about related to the farm, recipes, parenting, gardening, or anything else? Let me know!

I think you know what you’re doing just as well as anyone. I’ve seen at least one video of you and your daughter making cards. I think you are very patient and model a great example of a good mom. You leave out a big part of the equation, though. How old is your daughter? Believe me, with girls especially, it makes a difference what stage she’s in…

Hi Wendy – she’s 7. Does that help?! I’m sitting here laughing. Much of the time she is super sweet and then she has these moments. I know it’s probably normal, right?

When my daughter was younger, she was the sweetest thing, but also very argumentative. She would pick a side she didn’t even agree with just to argue a point. She mainly liked to mess with her very opinionated grandmother. As she got older, this continued. When she was an adult she told me that if I had said, “you know what? You’re right”, it would’ve stopped her in her tracks, even though she knew she wasn’t right. Now she’s a grown adult with children of her own, we are best friends, and she has even apologized. I actually don’t think there’s a moral to your story. Kids will continue to puzzle us forever more. Just enjoy the ride and the cuddles!

Thanks for sharing Debbie! I have a stepchild who sounds like your daughter. I’m going to have to try doing what you said and saying “you’re right.” And you’re probably right…no moral here. Just a funny story I’ll probably tell for years to come!

Sounds like she’s ready to be a teenager! It makes you wonder if she fully realized what she said. I guess I would continue to acknowledge and praise her for her actions. If she says not to do it, I would say how difficult it is not to be thankful and appreciative when people are kind, followed up by a hug or two.

Thanks Terry! I give her praise in other ways on a regular basis but have never gotten a response quite like this. Maybe it was just a mood at the time being.
