A Fall Card With a Watercolor Leaves Technique

17 Oct

I just love fall. If you’ve been here before, you probably already know that because I tell you all the time 🙂 One of the things I love is the color of the changing leaves. Until just a few days ago in northern Indiana, we still had very little color on the trees, but I noticed yesterday they are finally starting to be pretty! I’ll have to soak up the view while it lasts because the leaves will probably start falling soon! I’m going out on a limb (haha) to make a generalization here, but I feel like everyone on the planet probably likes leaf cards. Am I right or wrong? Maybe I just love them so much that I have enough love to share with everyone else! Well if you love leaf cards like I do, I have one to share with you today. It is a fall card that I used a watercolor leaves technique to make. The technique is very simple to do with only a few materials required. Keep reading and I’ll explain how to do it!

First I want to show you the Gather Together bundle that I used to make this card. It includes simple fall images and dies, as well as nice phrases for fall cards and other times of the year as well.

I’m going to attempt to explain how I made the leaves and the watercolor wash background. If you would prefer to see a video showing exactly how I did this, please join my Facebook group and search for ‘watercolor fall leaf card’ to find a video I made recently on how to make this card.

Watercolor Wash Background Technique

Prepare a 5 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ card base of Whisper White Thick cardstock or Shimmery White cardstock. Use an aqua painter and dip the tip into a very small amount of Sahara Sand ink. Sweep the aqua painter back and forth across the card to make a ‘messy brushstroke’ look. Pick up more ink as needed and repeat until you have the look you desire.

Watercolor Leaves Technique

Create the watercolor leaves by doing the following:

Top leaf: Stamp the leaf onto watercolor paper using Merry Merlot ink. Use an aqua painter to pick up more Merry Merlot ink and ‘color in’ the leaf. Add some Cajun Craze ink as well. Let dry and cut out using the leaf die.

Bottom leaf: Use the exact same process except you will stamp the leaf with Cajun Craze ink.

Like I said, you can see a video of me making this card if you join my Facebook group and search for ‘watercolor fall leaf card.’
