Maximizing Use Of Supplies

Space is valuable in our craft collections! Also, we are usually spending within a budget so we want to purchase items that we can get the most uses out of, right? It’s wonderful when we can use one product in a variety of ways, and that’s why I’m so excited to share today how to use metal dies to emboss instead of cut.

Let’s talk about it.

Supplies You Will Need

To emboss with dies, you will need the following supplies:

• Cut and Emboss Machine and Plate #4 for 3D embossing folders
• Metal dies
• Impressions Plate
• Paper

That’s it! Most likely you already have the supplies with the exception of the Impressions Plate.

What Is The Impressions Plate?

The Impressions Plate is a rubber mat that will feed through your embossing machine along with other parts of the platform. The rubber surface allows the dies to press into the rubber, creating an embossing pattern, while also preventing the dies from actually cutting through the paper.

How To Emboss With Dies

Here is the process for embossing with dies. I’m describing the process for the platforms that I use with my Stampin Up Cut and Emboss Machine.

• Prepare plates one and two.
• On top of plate two, lay your metal dies, cutting side facing up.
• Add paper on top of the dies.
• Add the rubber mat.
• Add plate number four.

Crank this through your machine and check out the beautiful results!

Alternative Option

After doing this several times, I realized it would be helpful to be able to place the dies on top of the paper so that I could see exactly where they were located. I changed around the order of my plates a bit to make this happen. I used plate one, plate two, the impressions plate, paper, dies with the cutting side down, and plate four on top. This allows you to see where the dies are located, but it is also creating blemishes in plate number four so keep this in mind if you try this out.

Sample Cards

For this first card, I used several of the scalloped blooms dies to create this fun background pattern.

The next card uses an assortment of fruit dies to create this fun and fruity embossed design.

For my third card, I used a Scalloped Blooms die to cut around the edge and then three fruit dies for the embossed area. I used blending brushes to add a touch of color to the fruits.

What If I Don’t Have The Stampin’ Up! Embossing Machine?

I know I will get questions regarding whether you can use our Impressions Plate even if you do not have the Stampin’ Up Cut and Emboss machine. I believe the answer is yes, as long as you have the number four plate or the equivalent for your machine which is made for 3-D (thick) embossing folders.

The base of the platform, number one and two, is what I use to die cut along with my two clear plates. Your machine should include an equivalent thickness. By adding the impressions plate and the 3-D embossing folder plate, I believe this should work with other machines.
