Stampin Up Beautiful Butterflies & Watercolor Techniques!

9 Jan

Did you hear that Sale-a-bration 2025 has begun and ordering is open for our new Mini Catalog?! This is a fun time of year, and for many of us in cold weather areas, it’s the perfect time of year to stay inside and craft. Today I want to share some ideas for simple watercolor cards with you. They may not look simple, but they really area. They feature the brand new Stampin Up Beautiful Butterflies bundle. Let’s take a look at them!

Watch today’s tutorial here to see how I created the watercolor portions of these cards! At the end I’m also inviting you to participate in reading the entire Bible with me in 2025!

Here you can see the set that I used to create these cards. It’s unique because not only does it include stamps and dies, it also includes the embossing folder which aligns with both the stamps and die.

You’ll see several neat ways to use these products on the cards below.

Here you can see how I created some of the pieces used on today’s cards. I used a water painter to pick up ink from a clear block, and just brushed back and forth on my cardstock.

You can play around with this technique and you’ll get different results depending on the type of paper you use, how much water, and the ink colors. Let’s look at a few cards I created using this technique.

Watercolor butterfly card samples

To create this background, I used Petunia Pop, Boho Blue, and Gorgeous Grape inks. Once it was dry, I embossed and die cut it (you can do this in one step using the hybrid embossing folder), then used blending brushes to add a bit of Gorgeous Grape ink to the raised portions.

For this next card, I folded a piece of the watercolor background in half, then die cut through both layers using the large butterfly die. I left the top edge of the die hanging over the top edge of my folded edge, so that it would remain intact as the card fold.

I used regular white cardstock for the watercolor techniques shown above, but you can get a different effect using watercolor paper. Here is one that I created with watercolor paper and Misty Moonlight and Boho Blue inks.

Here’s another piece of the sample background used on another card.

Here’s another one of my favorite ways to watercolor. Ink up a large acrylic block with two or three colors of ink. Spritz it several times with a water spritzer. With a Stampin Pierce Mat under your scrap paper to protect your work surface, lay watercolor paper on top of the pad and press the block against the paper to transfer the color. The foam pad is needed to provide a little bit of cushion.

I used this technique to create the lower layers on these butterflies. The upper layers were created using the first technique that I shared.

I used the block stamping technique to create the background of this card as well. Here you can see how the butterfly is both die cut and embossed, which I did using the die and embossing folder at the same time. Watch along with the video to see this and more about all of these techniques!
