How To Make A DIY Embossing Buddy

2 Oct

Yesterday I shared all about heat embossing, a beautiful technique for making cards and other paper projects. I mentioned that one of the materials needed is an embossing buddy, but Stampin Up no longer sells this handy tool. No worries, today I will share how to make a DIY embossing buddy, and it only takes two items that you likely already have at home!

First, let’s talk about what an embossing buddy is!

What Is It?

An embossing buddy is a tool used for heat embossing. Prior to stamping and adding embossing powder, the buddy is wiped over the surface of the paper to remove static and moisture.

Want more details on the use of this handy tool? Let’s talk about it.

What Is It For?

The purpose of removing moisture and static from the paper is to prevent excess embossing powder from clinging to it. If excess powder is on the paper when it is heat set, it will permanently be on the paper.

You don’t want that excess powder permanently melted onto your cardstock. So let’s start talking about how to make a buddy!

Materials Needed

To make a DIY embossing buddy, you’ll need pantyhose or a child’s sock and cornstarch or baby powder. My example will use pantyhose and cornstarch.

How To Assemble

First, gather your materials. Cut about one foot of pantyhouse from the toe up. Place the foot part of the hose into a small cup, and wrap the rest over the top of the cup.

Next, use a spoon to add 2 or 3 tablespoons of cornstarch inside the hose.

Now you can remove the hose from the cup.

Next, tie a knot just above the cornstarch.

Now pull the cornstarch ball inside the rest of the hose and knot it again.

[…] EMBOSSING TIP: If you notice that stray bits of embossing powder stick to your paper (leaving unsightly specks around your design), you are not alone! It’s caused by static, and can be easily remedied by rubbing your paper with an anti-static embossing pad like this one (or, you can make your own anti-static pouch!) […]
