Watercolor Birthday

7 Jul

I’ve been playing around with watercoloring as you may know if you’ve been following along lately. A few days ago I explained some basic ways to create watercolor backgrounds for your cards. Check it out here. When I was honing my watercoloring skills, I ended up with a bunch of beautiful samples that I’m working on turning into finished cards. That’s where today’s watercolor birthday card came from.

For the watercolor portion of this card, I used Rich Razzleberry and Blackberry Bliss ink. My favorite part of this watercolor is the speckling. It’s really easy to create this effect. Once you have applied the color to your watercolor paper and it’s still wet, just sprinkle it with salt and let it dry. If your paper isn’t very wet, you can actually spritz it with water after you add the salt. Then be patient and wait for it to dry and create the wonderful speckling. Once dry, just brush off the salt and be amazed!

Actually, the specking effect was much more dramatic when I first created it. Unfortunately, when I added the embossed greeting at the bottom, the heat tool changed the speckles. Originally the centers of the speckles were white but they turned dark when I used the heat tool on it. Apparently I charred it! It’s possible that the heat tool and watercolor paper don’t work well together. I’ll have to play around with it more to determine this for sure.

Watercolor Birthday Card

I have more watercolor samples to share coming up! Check back and see them! I have a really great manly watercolor card coming up that you don’t want to miss!
